Character Background

• History: wiki link!
• Core Relationships: Tanya tends to form shallow relationships with people, limiting her interactions to work or tempering her personality in order to make a good impression (when trying to network). She is an orphan and made no attempt to connect with her peers at the orphanage before volunteering for the army. There are only a few people/entities she interacts with regularly.
-- Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov: a.k.a. Visha. Tanya's trusty adjutant, who has worked with her for about two years, the longest of her subordinates by far. Tanya values her greatly for her competence and tactful initiative and often thinks proudly of how much Visha's developed in terms of human capital in her care. Tanya trusts her implicitly. At the same time, she realizes she doesn't know much about Visha's personal life or motivations and doesn't yet show signs of wanting to fix that.
-- 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion/Salamander Kampfgruppe: Tanya's elite subordinates. She describes them as "meat shields," helpful tools to help her survive the war. She's a strict and demanding superior to them yet fair and competent as their leader, always leading them from the front. They fear and respect her in equal measure. They have a good rapport, often joking even on the battlefield. She is proud of them and guards them jealously as her precious human resources. While she always speaks of them in terms of their usefulness to her, she is willing to stick up for them with her superiors.
-- Maximilian Johann von Uger: One of Tanya's classmates from war college. She manipulated him into dropping out of the promotion track (in order to put herself in a better position), urging him to think of his family and avoid combat. However, he is thankful to her and so they enjoy a friendly relationship throughout the war. As he becomes a logistics officer, he does his best to push small luxury goods to her on the front line, and she brings souvenirs for him from her military travels. She often goes to him for frank discussions about the war because he's neither superior nor subordinate yet has the ear of the General Staff. He is one of her few friends in a more traditional sense.
-- Erich von Lergen: A fellow staff officer who has followed Tanya's career from her training days. Having seen her brutal, violent tendencies, he fears her and is convinced of her madness, and tries multiple times to warn his superiors about her character when she is being discussed for promotion. However, Tanya thinks fondly of him as being one of the few good people reluctant to send a child to the front lines and is genuinely glad whenever she encounters him. He thinks of her as a concern/acquaintance while she thinks of him openly as a good co-worker and friend. Over the course of the war, as Lergen slowly comes to understand Tanya's way of thinking, they speak on more equal terms.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

Positive Traits:

(+) Intelligent. Tanya prides herself on being educated, rational, and civilized. She spent an extraordinary amount of time in the library studying while in war college, and she relishes being able to read and pen papers in her free time. Her mind is a constantly turning wheel, often going on wild tangents and planning two steps ahead or trying to kill two birds with one stone. She has high analytical ability and tactical and strategic insight; her superior generals often use her for critical roles because they can trust her to read their intentions and accomplish goals through independent action if necessary.
(+) Decisive. She is able to determine optimal actions quickly and does not hesitate to execute them right away, sometimes taking the people around her aback. This often gives her the upper hand when leading her troops in the field, as by the time the enemy is able to intuit her intent, she and her battalion are already ripping through them. Her ruthlessness in situations that would make other soldiers hesitate has made even her allies fear her as inhuman.
(+) Hard-working. Tanya would rather suffer to mitigate a known risk than avoid suffering and run into probable risks. All of her free energy is spent on preparing for the future and the betterment of her career, whether it's networking to build up favorable contacts, studying to deepen her knowledge, or taking care of her health to increase her general productivity. She lives to work, and even when she hates an order she's given, she puts everything into achieving the best possible result.
(+) Law-abiding. Tanya pours so much energy into knowing the laws that she may as well be a lawyer. No matter what, she will never willingly break a law... even if she'll happily abuse loopholes. If ordered to do something which may cause legal trouble down the line, she takes care to raise an objection or distance herself for the record. She will faithfully follow laws which she deems logical and good, and do what's within her power to ensure that the people around her enjoy the benefits of the law as well.
(+) Appreciative. She has a keen eye for people's efforts and talents. She always takes note of people who do their jobs well and remembers to appropriately award them in due time, whether it's through a tip or an award recommendation or a blind eye turned. If someone does her a favor, she's sure to remember it.
(+) Humanistic. She believes strongly in the value of human capital — that everyone has a place and function in the world, is capable of building up their value, and has a right to personal freedom. Humans are great, humans working together can achieve anything. Despite her war-hungry reputation, she is a pacifist and believes that the killing of any human is a terrible waste of potential. This inherent faith that all people have something to offer can make her surprisingly open-minded and forgiving toward people who previously made a bad impression on her.

Negative Traits:

(-) Self-centered. Tanya is selfish. Seriously.. She measures most things by their value to her, and her only motivations in life are to secure a good future for herself. While she will help the people around her if she can do so easily, her concerns for other people are a 1 out of 10 versus a 9 out of 10 for herself. All of her tactical decisions on the battlefield are framed as ways to ensure her own survival; she privately refers to her subordinates as meat shields, even justifying her position at the head of formations as the most safe place to be because her subordinates will absorb more fire as the battalion maneuvers away. I cannot overstate how much Tanya thinks about her personal safety and prospects over anyone else's.
(-) Obsessed with outward impression. The only thing that will get Tanya to act altruistically is her concern for how she looks to other people. She loves her some signaling theory; she is eminently preoccupied with how to appear as a model citizen and employee, often forcing herself to act in ways she normally wouldn't so as to build up her esteem. From her posture to her clothes to her expressions, she has manufactured herself into what she believes is desirable from a professional standpoint. As a result, her inner narrative is often very different from how she appears outwardly.
(-) Low empathy/emotional intelligence. Tanya is incredibly bad at interpreting other people's emotions beyond the basics. She extrapolates from their actions and thus forms complete impressions based on incomplete data. Because her subordinates are eager to follow her orders, she assumes they're crazy and bloodthirsty when they're really more afraid of her and/or driven to achieve for their homeland. Because Lergen protested her promotions, she assumes he's thinking responsibly of her age and looking out for her when he really just thought she was a psychopath. Tanya's inability to read other people plagues her constantly without her realizing it. To try to understand the world around her, she alternately projects her own feelings onto other people or runs them through an economic-minded lens, giving her an often distorted view. She even has a poor understanding of her own emotions; when she feels things that she can't quickly explain, she will try to put a logical frame on them and sweep them out of mind.
(-) Ideologically inflexible. Tanya is utterly convinced that she has the map of life figured out and is a paragon of logic. While she likes to think of herself as flexible, she is only as flexible as allowed by the teachings of the Chicago school of economics, which encourages academic debate and improvement. She otherwise tends to be swiftly dismissive of "illogical" and inefficient modes of thought, and easily incited to anger if those modes end up interfering with her life.
(-) Ruthless. If it's an order or her life is at risk, she will not hesitate to kill. However she needs to discipline her subordinates to keep order in her unit, she will do it — even if it means threatening them with violence or sending them to other more dangerous positions. She will not tolerate incompetence or insubordination, and while she may hear problem individuals out, she will eventually deal with them in one way or another if they don't shape up. Of course, she won't spare her enemies either, finding no problem with shooting them in the back or blowing them up as efficiently as possible, or booby trapping corpses to lower enemy morale and cause bonus injury. She is often willing to go one step further than most soldiers would, provided she's within the bounds of the law. She's always overdoing things, and her overachievement in the military has the generals calling her Mad Dog due to her uncontrollable, unpredictable nature.
(-) Hatred. She's fixated on Being X, whom she considers her archenemy, and the threat posed by the Communist Federation of Russy (yes I know), which she repeatedly tries to impress upon her superiors in the military. Her hatred for Being X and Communism often fractures her reason, and she expresses genuine delight over getting to kill Communists. The time she got to humiliate the Federation by attacking its capital is probably the happiest she's been in this lifetime.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: I'd like to keep Tanya's powers intact and have her blood powers weaker! As an aerial mage, she can fly up to 12,000 feet. With the aid of a computation orb, she uses her gun or knife as a "scepter" to focus her formulas (spells), and can either imbue properties on her bullets or fire blasts directly from her gun. She can also cast general formulas to form defensive barriers, strengthen herself, deploy optical illusions, reinforce tools or sharpen their edges, alter a subject's mental state with "doping formulas", trigger combustions, generate air and heat, alter or amplify her voice, and more.
• Blood Type: Coldblood
• Omen: Northern shrike
• Blessed Day: July 18th, her birthday.
• Patron Pthumerian: The Reckoning. As Tanya is a stringent believer in laws and fairness, she'll be overall pleased with being associated with the Reckoning. However, in fear of herself accidentally doing something to get justice'd, Tanya will be extremely motivated to learn the Reckoning's thinking and possibly get into her good graces (if such a thing is possible).
• Blood Power Manifestation: She'll primarily be using her Coldblood to augment her bullets and knife, and not as a first resort if she can help it. She'll probably aim for a basic competence and nothing more, just enough to extract any tactical benefits to on-demand fire and ice.
